A conversation with Claudette Ford of Public Works back to Stairs website

I spoke with Claudette Ford, and we covered many topics, but the 'news' is that there is extra 'Measure B' funds newly available to the PWD.The PWD has earmarked enough for the Oakland stairs for Ms. Ford to declare: "Your stairs will be taken care of...."

She made a verbal commitment to repair both sets of Merriewood stairs. I queried about the possible time-frame of these repairs, and she said that the contracts would have to be developed soon by the PWD, then go out to bid and award, then the work performed by the awardee. She roughly estimated that the repairs could be completed by late summer 2001.

She further said that there was no means for the PWD to provide maintenance for the cleaned lower Merriewood stairs in the meantime. Nor would she commit to making any minimal repairs to the lower Merriewood stairs that could be made before major contracting work next year.
