The purpose of this website is to provide the local community with contact information and current status about the unacceptable state of the Merriewood Stairs. The stairs are dangerous and unusable; barricaded, decaying and overgrown. There are no sidewalks to use as an option to dodging cars on the narrow and winding neighborhood streets. |

Lower Merriewood Stairs
Cleaned
By Jim Dexter - Captain Lower Merriewood Stairs
Three members of the neighborhood (Dick Olsen, Jim Dexter, and John Ashton) performed a general cleanup and vegetation cutback on the Lower Merriewood stairs, removing over 264 gallons of debris from the stairs (dirt, garbage, fallen leaves, and green growth overgrowing the stairs).
This neighborhood cleanup is a continuing effort by the neighborhood to assist the City of Oakland in maintaining the Lower Merriewood stairs. By performing yesterdays maintenance, the stairs remain in a fully functional and well-maintained state.
Gas-powered vegetation cutters were used that allowed for a quick cutback of growing ivy and blackberry vines. The stairs were cleaned of a significant amount of fallen leaves and eroded dirt in the process of the green-growth removal.
The cleanup crew inspected the stairs, and the only immediate safety issue found was one tread that needs replacement. The City of Oakland Public Works Agency has been notified of the safety issue.
